The Workshop

The Dangerous Decibels Educator Training Workshop is designed to prepare and equip you to present a 50-minute program that is effective in changing knowledge, attitudes, and intended behaviors in students regarding their hearing health.  This program is meant for “KIDS” of ALL ages.

“Exceptional experience! I can’t wait to save hearing!” past workshop participant.

Lead by hearing conservation, health communication, educational outreach experts from Oregon Health & Science University, Portland State University, and University of Northern Colorado (see list below), this two-day workshop (16 hours) was developed with NIH funding by a team of experts in educational outreach, hearing science, and health communication. The classroom program and training workshop has been evaluated systematically using control groups and outcomes measures. It includes education, practice, and feedback to completely prepare individuals to walk into a classroom to confidently deliver an effective Dangerous Decibels presentation. Workshop curricula includes background information on hearing, anatomy, physics of sound, what are sources and effects of dangerous sounds, and how to protect hearing. Also included is instruction in classroom management, hands-on activities.  The second day is devoted to giving all participants an opportunity to deliver the program to instructors for critique and feedback. This has been shown to be extremely important for all. Instructors are available after the workshop for continued support and as a resource through email or phone. The workshop is intended for nurses, teachers, audiologists, health professionals, and anyone else who is interested in teaching this valuable lesson.
